Dumplings (Betty Crocker)

Kathy contributed this recipe, adding that the Midwest is chicken and dumplings country. This recipe is quite similar to her mother's, who always served chicken and dumplings with mashed potatoes. The secret is in the covered and uncovered timed cooking.

Ingredients
  • 1 1/2 cup flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • 3 tbsp shortening
  • 3/4 cup milk
Instructions
  1. Mix dry ingredients, cut in shortening until the pieces are evenly sized and small, blend in milk.
  2. Drop by spoonfuls onto chicken or meat in bubbling broth (do not drop directly into broth).
  3. Cook slowly UNCOVERED, for 10 minutes, then an additional 10 minutes COVERED.
  4. Remove dumplings and meat to hot platter. Keep hot while making a gravy from the broth.
